Welcome to our math class! Today, we will be diving into the fascinating world of irrational numbers. Are you curious about what irrational numbers are? Well, let’s start by distinguishing them from rational numbers.

Rational Numbers vs. Irrational Numbers

Rational numbers can be written as a ratio of two integers (a fraction) and have a finite or repeating decimal representation. For example, ½, 0.25 and 1.33333… are all rational numbers.

On the other hand, irrational numbers cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. They do not repeat and have an infinite decimal representation. Some examples of irrational numbers are the square root of 2, π (pi), and the golden ratio.

Irrational numbers can be challenging to understand, but we will take it step by step.
