To engage students in the topic of family in Spanish, encouraging them to share about their own families while learning new vocabulary and structures related to family relationships.
¡Hola, clase! Today, we are going to dive into a very special topic: la familia (the family). Families come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has its own story to tell. To kick off our lesson, I want you to imagine you are a character in a Spanish movie about families.
Instructions:
Grab Your Imagination: Close your eyes and picture your family. Think about who is there, what you do together, and some of your favorite memories.
Create a Movie Scene: Picture a scene that could be part of a movie about your family. What would happen? Would you be celebrating a birthday, cooking a special meal, or going on an adventure?
Draw It Out: Open your eyes and grab a piece of paper. Draw a scene that represents your family. It can be anything! You could draw your family members, an important place you go together, or something you do that makes you feel connected.
Label Your Drawing: Once you’ve finished your drawing, label each family member in Spanish. Use the vocabulary words we will soon learn, like madre, padre, hermano, hermana, abuelo, and abuela.
After everyone has finished their drawings, we will gather in small groups and share our scenes with each other. In your group, try to use as much Spanish as you can! This is a great time to practice our new vocabulary and to learn about each other's families.
Through this activity, not only will you practice your Spanish, but you will also discover how unique and diverse our families are. Remember, cada familia tiene su propia historia (every family has its own story), and today, we will celebrate that diversity as we learn together!
Así que, ¡comencemos la clase y hablemos de nuestras familias! (So, let’s start the class and talk about our families!)
