Lesson Steps

1. Introduction to Winter Wonderland (10 minutes)

• Start the lesson with a brief discussion about winter and what a "Winter Wonderland" looks like. Show images of snowy landscapes, ice skating, and snowflakes.
• Engage students by asking:
  • What do you see in a winter wonderland?
  • How can we use math to explore these beautiful winter scenes?

2. Math Concepts Overview (10 minutes)

• Introduce key math concepts relevant to the activity:
  • Measurement: Measuring snowflakes (using templates) and drawing symmetrical shapes.
  • Data Collection: Create a survey on favorite winter activities and tally the results.
  • Basic Geometry: Identifying different shapes found in winter (e.g., circles in snowmen, stars in snowflakes).

3. Group Activities (20 minutes)

• Measurement Challenge: Each group will use templates to create different snowflake designs, measure them, and calculate their areas.
