Objective:

To reinforce the proper use of "should" in English grammar and to provide students with an engaging warm-up activity.

Warm-up Activity: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

  1. Start the lesson by playing a snippet of the song "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash to introduce the concept of "should" in a fun and interactive way.
  2. Ask students to listen carefully to the lyrics of the song and make a list of all the instances where the word "should" is used.
  3. After the song, discuss as a class why the word "should" is important in English grammar and review the proper usage of the word.
  4. Divide the class into pairs and assign each pair a scenario where they must decide whether they "should" or "shouldn't" do something. For example, "You are sick and have a fever. Should you go to school today?" or "You have an important exam tomorrow. Should you stay up late to study or get a good night's sleep?"
  5. Each pair will take turns presenting their scenario and explaining why they believe they "should" or "shouldn't" do something.
  6. As a class, discuss each scenario and why certain decisions were made using "should" or its negative form "shouldn't".

By starting with a fun and interactive warm-up activity, students will be engaged and more likely to retain the proper use of "should" throughout the rest of the lesson.
