Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Engage the students by asking them if they have ever been in an interview situation (e.g., for a school role, a team, or a job). Encourage a brief discussion about their experiences.
- Explain the importance of good interview skills, both for academic and professional purposes.
Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)
-
Introduce the Five Es of interviewing:
- Engage: Start with a positive, confident demeanor. Make eye contact and greet your interviewer warmly.
- Explore: Listen carefully to the questions and take a moment to think before answering.
- Explain: Answer the questions clearly and fully, using relevant examples to support your points.
- Elaborate: If necessary, expand on your answers and provide additional insight or information.
- Evaluate: Reflect on your answers and the interview process for future growth.
-
Provide examples for each of the Five Es, especially focusing on how they apply in an interview context.
Guided Practice (10 Minutes)
- Divide students into pairs for a mock interview activity. Assign roles: one as the interviewer and the other as the interviewee.
- Provide a set of sample interview questions relevant for the age group, such as:
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want to join this team/school?
- Describe a time you faced a challenge and how you dealt with it.
- Set the timer for 3 minutes for each pair to conduct their mock interviews, ensuring they apply the Five Es.
Independent Practice (5 Minutes)
- After completing the mock interviews, students will switch roles.
- Encourage them to practice the Five Es in their second round, aiming to improve based on their first experience.
Closing and Evaluation (5 Minutes)
-
Conclude the lesson by gathering feedback from students about their experiences. Discuss:
- What did they learn about effective interview skills?
- Which aspects of the Five Es will they focus on improving?
-
Hand out the evaluation rubric for peer feedback, allowing students to assess their partner’s performance, focusing on the application of the Five Es.
Assessment
- Participation in mock interviews.
- Completion of the peer feedback evaluation.
- Self-reflection on their interviewing skills and application of the Five Es.
Reflection
- After the lesson, ask students to write a short paragraph about one skill they aim to improve for future interviews. This will help solidify their learning and create a plan for further development.
This lesson plan encourages active participation, enhances speaking and listening skills, and equips students with essential interview techniques using the Five Es.
