Lesson Plan: Factors and Multiples
Subject: Mathematics
Grade: 4
Duration: 30 Minutes
Topic: KY.4.OA.4 - Find Factors and Multiples of Numbers in the Range 1-100
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Define and identify factors of whole numbers from 1 to 100.
- Find all factor pairs for a given whole number in that range.
- Understand the difference between factors and multiples.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Chart paper and markers
- Worksheets with practice problems
- Pair of dice (optional for games)
- Interactive math game (online or offline) for factors and multiples (optional)
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Hook: Begin with a simple question: “What do you think makes a number special?” Listen to a few responses related to factors and multiples.
- Define Factors: Write the definition on the board - “Factors are numbers we can multiply together to get another number.”
- Define Multiples: Write the definition for multiples - “Multiples are what you get when you multiply a number by an integer.”
Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)
-
Identifying Factors:
- Use an example, such as the number 12.
- Write the factors of 12 on the board: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
- Show how to find factor pairs: (1, 12), (2, 6), (3, 4).
- Explain that there are no other combinations of whole numbers that will multiply to make 12.
-
Finding Factors:
- Demonstrate how to find factors for a different number, like 30.
- Ask students to help identify the factors: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30.
-
Practice Finding Factors:
- Ask students to find factors for a number selected at random from 1 to 100 and share their answers with a partner.
Guided Practice (5 Minutes)
-
In-Pairs Activity:
- In pairs, have students roll a pair of dice.
- The sum of the dice will be the number they work with.
- Each pair will find all the factors and create a list of factor pairs on chart paper.
-
Sharing Findings:
- After a few minutes, ask pairs to share their findings and explain their reasoning to the class.
Independent Practice (5 Minutes)
- Distribute worksheets with a set of numbers.
- Have students find factors and complete the factor pairs for 5 different numbers between 1 and 100 on their own.
Closing (5 Minutes)
- Review: Reinforce what factors are and how to find them.
- Discussion: Ask the class why it is important to understand factors and multiples in math and real-life situations.
- Exit Ticket: Each student writes one number between 1-100 and lists its factors before leaving the class.
Assessment
- Monitor students during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding.
- Collect the worksheets to evaluate their ability to identify factors and factor pairs.
Extensions
- For advanced students, introduce the concept of prime and composite numbers.
- Use technology to engage students with interactive factor and multiple games.
