Introduction to Social Skills

Opening Activity: The Invisible Spider Web

Objective: To engage students' imaginations and stimulate discussions about social connections and interactions.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Set the Scene: Begin by dimming the lights slightly and creating a comfortable atmosphere. Tell the students that they are going to participate in an imaginative activity that will help them understand how social skills connect everyone in a group.

  2. Explain the Concept: Introduce the concept of an "invisible spider web" that represents the connections we have with one another in our friendships and social circles. Explain that every time we interact positively with someone, we strengthen that web.

  3. The Activity:

    • Hand the ball of yarn to a student and ask them to introduce themselves. As they do, they should hold onto the end of the yarn.
    • After they introduce themselves, they pass the yarn to another student across the room. That student then introduces themselves while holding onto the yarn and passing it along to someone else.
    • Continue this until every student is part of the web. They should end up holding different pieces of yarn, all interconnected.
  4. Discuss the Connections: Once the activity is complete, stand back and have a look at the intricate web formed in the room. Facilitate a discussion with questions such as:

    • How does it feel to see this web?
    • What does each connection represent?
    • Why is it important to maintain these connections in our social lives?
  5. Link to Social Skills: Conclude the activity by explaining that just like the yarn, good social skills help us connect with others. Mention that today’s lesson will focus on developing the skills necessary to create and maintain these connections, leading to stronger and healthier relationships.

Transition into the Lesson:

With the spider web behind them and new connections in mind, the students are now ready to dive deeper into social skills, learning how to communicate effectively, show empathy, and resolve conflicts—essentially learning how to strengthen their own social webs!
