Overview
This lesson is designed to improve reading comprehension skills for Year/Grade 7 students. The lesson will last for approximately 30 minutes and will be focused on developing key strategies for reading comprehension.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify key elements of a text
- Use context clues to determine meaning of unknown words
- Make predictions based on information in a text
- Summarize main points of a passage
Materials
- A short text appropriate for Year/Grade 7 students
- Whiteboard and markers
- Copies of the text for each student
- Note-taking materials for students (paper and pen)
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet students and introduce the topic of reading comprehension.
- Ask students what they think reading comprehension means.
- Explain that reading comprehension involves understanding what you read and being able to remember and use that information.
Text Analysis (10 minutes)
- Distribute a copy of the selected text to each student.
- Ask students to read the text silently.
- After a few minutes, ask students to share the title of the text and the author.
- On the whiteboard, create a chart with the following headings: characters, setting, problem, solution.
- Ask students to use the text to fill in each part of the chart.
- As a class, discuss the students' answers and make any necessary corrections.
Vocabulary (5 minutes)
- Choose a few words from the text that may be unfamiliar to students.
- Write the words and their definitions on the whiteboard.
- Ask students to use the words in a sentence to demonstrate their understanding.
Predictions (5 minutes)
- Ask students to predict what might happen next in the story.
- Allow students to share their predictions with the class.
- As a class, discuss the likelihood of each prediction and use evidence from the text to support or refute their predictions.
Summary (5 minutes)
- Ask students to write a paragraph summarizing the main points of the text.
- Allow students to share their summaries with the class.
- As a class, discuss the students' answers and make any necessary corrections.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Recap the key strategies for reading comprehension discussed in the lesson.
- Encourage students to use these strategies in their future reading.
- Thank students for their participation and dismiss them for their next class.
