Procedure
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Introduce the topic of texture in music, explaining that it is the way multiple musical lines or voices interact with each other to create the overall sound of a piece.
- Play a short audio sample of a piece of music and ask students to listen for the different instruments or voices they hear.
- Definitions (10 minutes)
- Distribute handouts with brief definitions and examples of monophonic, homophonic, and polyphonic textures.
- Define each texture and play audio samples of each style to help students understand the differences between them.
- Analysis (10 minutes)
- Distribute worksheets for students to analyze the texture of a piece of music.
- Play a short audio sample of a piece of music and ask students to identify the texture of the piece.
- Provide guidance and support as students work through the worksheet.
- Discussion (5 minutes)
- Discuss the results of the worksheet as a class and ask students to share their analysis of the piece of music.
- Ask students to provide examples of music they have heard that exhibit each type of texture.
- Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Review the different textures in music and ask students to identify which texture they prefer listening to.
- End the lesson by playing a short excerpt of a piece of music that demonstrates their preferred texture.

Extension Activity
