Do Now (5 minutes)
- Students will read an article on readworks.org titled "The Benefits of Walking" and answer the following questions in their journals:
- What is the main idea of the article?
- What are three supporting details that the author uses to support the main idea?
- Write down two words that you did not know the meaning of and use context clues to determine their meaning.
Mini Lesson (30 minutes)
- Teacher will give an introduction to readworks.org and how to navigate the website.
- Students will work in pairs to read an informational text on readworks.org titled "The History of Chocolate" and complete the following tasks:
- Identify the main idea of the article.
- Circle three supporting details that the author uses to support the main idea.
- Determine the meaning of two unknown words using context clues.
- Discuss with your partner the author's purpose for writing the article.
- Teacher will go through the main idea and supporting details of "The History of Chocolate" as a whole class.
- Teacher will then introduce a new informational text titled "The Benefits of Exercise" and model how to identify the main idea and supporting details and analyze the author's purpose for writing.
Conclusion (10 minutes)
- Students will independently read an article on readworks.org titled "Saving the Rainforests" and complete the following tasks:
- Identify the main idea of the article.
- Circle three supporting details that the author uses to support the main idea.
- Determine the meaning of two unknown words using context clues.
- Analyze the author's purpose for writing the article.
- Teacher will go through the answers as a whole class.
Differentiation
- Advanced students can be given more difficult articles to read and analyze.
- Struggling students can be given simpler articles to read and analyze with the support of a peer.
