I’ve brought a Magical Mystery Box filled with various objects that contain R-controlled vowels. But here’s the catch: you can’t look inside yet!
Before we reveal the treasures inside, we’re going to play a guessing game. I will describe an object without saying its name. After each clue, you’ll have to guess the word using your knowledge of R-controlled vowels.
"This is a very big cat that purrs and loves to chase mice."
What word could it be?
(Once students guess 'tiger', we will discuss the R-controlled vowels in it.)
"This fruit is sweet, sometimes red, and often used for making pies."

(Students will guess 'berry' and we’ll explore the vowel sounds.)
After we’ve made our guesses, I will reveal the objects. Each object will have a label with a word that includes R-controlled vowels: car, bird, and fork.
