This structured lesson plan is designed to keep Year/Grade 3 students actively engaged while teaching them the fundamentals of volleyball in a fun and collaborative manner.
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to learn about volleyball, a fantastic and energizing team sport. Our objectives for today's lesson are to understand the basic rules and techniques of volleyball, improve our hand-eye coordination and teamwork skills, and, most importantly, have fun while engaging in physical activity!
"First, let’s talk a little about the game itself. Volleyball is played between two teams where the main objective is to send the ball over the net and score points by grounding the ball on the opponent's side. Each team can touch the ball three times before it must go over the net.
"Does anyone have any questions about volleyball before we jump into our activities? If not, let’s warm up!"
"Okay, team! Before we start playing, it’s essential to warm up our muscles. Please form a large circle around me and pay attention to my instructions.
"Let’s start with some arm swings! Swing your arms forward and backward like this—great job! Now let’s do some lunges. Step forward with one leg, bend your knees, and switch legs.
"Let’s do this for about one minute and make sure to keep moving, getting our heart rates up! Remember, warming up helps prevent injury. Are we ready to feel energized for our volleyball skills practice? Let’s go!"
"Now that we are warmed up, it's time to practice some basic volleyball skills. I’m going to divide you into pairs.
"You will work with your partner to practice passing and setting the volleyball. One person will toss the ball to their partner, who will then pass it back. Remember to use your arms and body to control the ball.
"I’ll be walking around to provide you with feedback, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. Let's practice for 10 minutes—go ahead, and let’s see those great passes!"
"Fantastic effort on those passes! Now, let’s move into our group activity. I want you to split into small groups of 5. Once in your groups, I want you to create a fun 30-second volleyball routine.
"Your routine should include a few passes and a team cheer at the end! Be creative and work together to figure out how to showcase what you’ve learned. You will have 10 minutes to prepare, and then each group will present their routine.
"Let’s see how creative you can be—get started!"
"I loved seeing those routines! Now, let’s put those skills to the test in a mini-volleyball game. I will set up cones to define the boundaries of the playing area.
"You will play in the same groups of 5, and I will whistle to indicate when to rotate. Each group will have a chance to play against another team, so make sure to use the skills we practiced today—like passing and teamwork.
"Let’s enjoy some friendly competition for about 5 minutes. Begin!"
"Well done, everyone! What a fun set of games we just had! Now, let’s take a moment to cool down. Please find some personal space and follow my lead in some static stretches.
"Stretch your arms overhead and lean to one side, then the other. Now let’s focus on your legs—stretch those hamstrings while sitting down. Very nice!
"While we cool down, I want you to think about what you learned today. Can someone share one thing they found fun or interesting about volleyball? [Allow for sharing] Great reflections!
"In summary, we practiced our passing, worked as a team, and learned some rules of the game today. Good job, everyone!"
"As we wrap up today's lesson, I have a short homework assignment for you. I’d like each of you to write a paragraph about what you learned today or about a volleyball player you admire.
"Please submit this assignment in our next class. I’m excited to hear your thoughts and stories! Remember to stay hydrated, and I’ll see you all on our next gym day!"
