Hook: The Mystery Box Challenge

Objective

Engage students in identifying different authorial purposes in a fun and interactive way.

Materials Needed

• A mystery box (or a large bag) filled with various items representing different texts (e.g., a toy, a food package, an advertisement, a travel brochure, etc.)
• Paper and pens
• A whiteboard or flip chart for group discussion

Activity Overview

1. Mystery Box Reveal (5 minutes)

   • Start the lesson by displaying the mystery box to the class. Build excitement by saying you have a box filled with various items that can "speak" to them.
   • Invite a few students to come up and pick one item from the box without revealing it to their classmates.

2. Think-Pair-Share (10 minutes)

   • Once an item is chosen, ask the students to think about the following questions:
     • What is this item?
     • What do you think the creator’s purpose was for making or providing it? (To inform, to entertain, to persuade, etc.)
   • Have students pair up and discuss their thoughts with a partner for a couple of minutes.

3. Group Share (10 minutes)

   • Invite each student who selected an item to share what they picked and their thoughts on the author’s purpose behind it.
   • As they share, write down their responses on the whiteboard, categorizing them under Inform, Entertain, and Persuade.

4. Discussion and Transition (5 minutes)

   • Facilitate a short discussion based on the items and their respective purposes. Ask guiding questions like:
     • Did everyone think about the purpose the same way?
     • How is understanding the author’s purpose important when reading a text?
   • Transition into the main lesson on Author’s Purpose by highlighting that just like the items in the box, texts have motivations too.
