Objective:

Hook: The Mystery Box

Materials Needed:

• A box or container
• Various small items representing different elements of American Indian culture (e.g., a feather, a small clay pot, a piece of rawhide, a stone for tools, a small drawing or picture of a totem pole)

The Activity:

1. First Impressions:

   • Begin the lesson by showing students an unmarked box. Tell them that inside this box are items that hold important connections to the lives of American Indian tribes.

2. Curiosity Spark:

   • Ask the students to guess what could be inside the box. Encourage them to think critically and creatively. "What do you believe people from long ago might have used in their everyday lives? What did they need to survive?"

3. Reveal the Treasures:

   • Open the box and take out each item one by one. For each item, pose a question. For example:
     • Feather: "What do you think this represents? How might feathers be important to American Indian cultures?"
     • Clay Pot: "What do you think this was used for? Can you think of any foods they might have stored in it?"
     • Rawhide: "What could this material have been used for? Can you imagine the process of making something from it?"

4. Discussion:

   • After revealing all items, facilitate a discussion on how different American Indian tribes interacted with their environment and what these items tell us about their daily lives. Encourage students to share their thoughts and how the different elements might connect to specific tribes or regions.

5. Transition to Lesson:

   • Conclude this activity with a smooth transition into the main lesson:
     • "Now that we've uncovered some fascinating treasures from the past, let’s dive deeper into the history of American Indian lands and discover the rich and diverse cultures that thrived across the United States!"
