Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Begin with a brief discussion about what an inference is.

   • Define Inference: An inference is a conclusion drawn from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements.
   • Write the definition on the board.

2. Provide a simple example of inference:

   • "If I see someone wearing a raincoat and carrying an umbrella, I might infer that it is going to rain."

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Read Aloud: Select a short story or passage and read it aloud to the class.
2. Model Making Inferences: After reading, demonstrate how to make inferences:
   • Ask questions like:
     • What can we infer about the character's feelings based on their actions?
     • What do you think will happen next? Why do you think that?
   • Write a few inferences on the whiteboard, citing evidence from the text.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Divide students into small groups.
2. Provide each group with the same passage and the inference graphic organizer.
3. Ask them to read the passage together and fill out the graphic organizer with at least three inferences they can draw from the text and the evidence supporting each inference.
4. Ask each group to share their inferences while supporting their reasoning with evidence.
