Academic Subject: Science
Topic: Properties of Matter
Grade Level: Year/Grade 5 (age of students: 9-10)
Lesson Length: 30 minutes
Learning Objective
- Students will be able to identify and describe the different properties of matter such as color, size, texture, shape, and state.
- Students will be able to explain how properties of matter are used to identify and classify different materials.
Materials
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Different materials such as toys, pencils, rocks, water, sand, leaves, and paper.
Hook (5 minutes)
- Show the students different materials and ask them to describe each one of the materials.
- Ask them if they noticed any similarities or differences between the materials.
- Explain to the students that these differences are due to the properties of matter.
Introduction to Properties of Matter (10 minutes)
- Define what is meant by the term "properties of matter."
- Explain to the students that properties of matter are characteristics that can be used to identify and classify different materials.
- Discuss examples of properties of matter such as color, size, texture, shape, and state.
- Use chart paper to write down student responses about properties of matter.
Exploring Properties of Matter (10 minutes)
- Show the students different materials such as toys, pencils, rocks, water, sand, leaves, and paper.
- Ask students to observe and explore the materials and identify their properties.
- Ask students to share their observations and describe the properties of the materials.
Using Properties of Matter (5 minutes)
- Explain to the students that properties of matter are used to identify and classify different materials.
- Give examples of how properties of matter can be used such as sorting recycling or identifying different minerals.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Review the different properties of matter and how they are used to identify and classify different materials.
- Ask students to think about how they can use properties of matter in their everyday life.
Homework
- Ask students to go around their house and identify materials with different properties of matter (ex: color, size, texture, shape, and state).
- Ask students to make a list of these materials and describe their properties.
- Remind students to bring their list to the next class to share with the group.
Note: If possible, the teacher should provide any necessary accommodations for students with disabilities or special needs.
