Goal:
The goal of this course is to introduce Year 1 students to English vocabulary associated with different jobs, to enhance their communication skills and widen their career awareness.
Aims:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and name different jobs in English
- Understand basic job descriptions and requirements
- Use new vocabulary to describe their own dream job
- Discuss and compare different jobs in English
- Write a short paragraph about a chosen job, including the responsibilities and qualifications required
Lesson Plan:
Lesson 1 - Introduction of Jobs
- Introduce vocabulary related to jobs through flashcards and pictures
- Encourage students to repeat after the teacher and practice pronunciation
- Ask students about their parents' jobs and if they know what they do
Lesson 2 - Job Descriptions
- Present different job descriptions in simple language
- Ask students to match job titles to the respective descriptions
- Have a class discussion about what each job requires and what they would like/dislike about it
Lesson 3 - My Dream Job
- Ask students what they want to be when they grow up
- Introduce vocabulary related to different careers (e.g. doctor, artist, chef)
- Provide sentence starters to encourage students to express their career aspirations (e.g. "I want to be a _____ because...")
- Students can draw and color a picture of themselves in their dream job
Lesson 4 - Comparing Jobs
- Present two different job options with contrasting traits
- Encourage students to analyze the jobs and give their opinion on which one they would prefer
- Ask students to use comparative language (e.g. "I think being a teacher is better than being a firefighter because...")
Lesson 5 - Writing about a Job
- Provide a template for students to write a short paragraph about a job they chose (e.g. firefighter, teacher, artist)
- Encourage students to use new vocabulary from the previous lessons to describe the responsibilities and qualifications for the job
- Allow time for students to present their paragraphs to the class, practicing their public speaking skills.
