Lesson Plan: Latitude and Longitude

Subject

Natural Science

Topic

Latitude and Longitude

Duration

30 minutes

Grade Level

Year 2

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts of latitude and longitude.
  2. Identify how latitude and longitude help locate places on Earth.
  3. Demonstrate basic skills in reading coordinates on a simple map.

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

Start by introducing the concept of latitude and longitude. Explain that latitude lines run from east to west and help us find out how far north or south a place is from the equator. Longitude lines run from north to south and help us find out how far east or west a place is from the Prime Meridian.

Discussion Questions:

{The image of a world map highlighting the equator and prime meridian with bright colors.}

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Explain Latitude:

    • Show how latitude lines are parallel and spaced equally from the equator.
    • Display examples of different latitude locations, such as the North pole (90°N) and the South pole (90°S).
  2. Explain Longitude:

    • Describe how longitude lines extend from pole to pole and vary in distance as they go up or down the map.
    • Point out the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) and how it divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Activity:

{The image of a classroom with children plotting points on their maps while a teacher guides them.}

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute worksheets that have a map with several marked points and a blank grid below.

Closing (5 minutes)

Discussion:
