Individual Work: Exploring Morphology Through Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words

Lesson Objective

By the end of this individual work session, students will deepen their understanding of morphology by exploring and applying the concepts of prefixes, suffixes, and root words to form new words and understand their meanings, enhancing their overall vocabulary and comprehension skills in English.

Part 1: Understanding the Building Blocks

Introduction to Morphology

Morphology is the study of the structure of words and how they are formed. It consists primarily of three components: root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

  1. Root Words: The base part of a word that carries the main meaning. For example, "act" in "action" or "react."
  2. Prefixes: Affixes added to the beginning of a root word to change its meaning. Examples include:
    • dis- (not) — "disagree"
    • pre- (before) — "preview"
  3. Suffixes: Affixes added to the end of a root word to modify its meaning or grammatical function. Examples include:
    • -ing (action or process) — "running"
    • -ful (full of) — "joyful"

Task:

  1. Find Examples: List three root words, and for each one, provide one prefix and one suffix that can be combined to create new words. For example:

    • Root: act
      • Prefix: re- → "react"
      • Suffix: -or → "actor"
  2. Define New Words: Write a brief definition for each new word created.

Part 2: Creating Your Own Words

Activity: Morphology Word Creation

Instructions:

  1. Choose a Root Word: From the examples discussed, select one root word that you would like to explore further.

  2. Build New Words:

    • Create two new words using different prefixes and suffixes.
    • Maintain the root word throughout your combinations.
  3. Visual Representation: Create a mind map or diagram that visually represents how your chosen root word changes with the added affixes.
