Engaging Introductory Activity for BODMAS in Grade 7 Mathematics
Activity: “Mystery Number Challenge”
Objective:
To introduce the BODMAS/BIDMAS rule through a fun and interactive challenge that captivates students’ curiosity and sets the tone for the lesson.
Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- A set of mystery numbers (example: 2, 7, 5)
- Paper slips for students to write their answers
- Small prizes (stickers, erasers, etc.) for winners
Introduction:

Set the Scene:
- Begin with a mysterious story: “Imagine you are secret agents on a mission to uncover the ‘Mystery Number’! To find it, you’ll need to crack the code using a series of mathematical challenges based on a special order of operations.”

Present the Mystery Numbers:
- Write the numbers 2, 7, and 5 on the board. Explain that these are your mystery numbers. These will be used in your calculations to get to the result you need.

The Challenge:
- Pose a question to the students: “Using these numbers and the operations of addition (+), subtraction (−), multiplication (×), and division (÷), can you find different ways to reach the number 21?”
- However, add the twist that in order to solve the equations correctly, they must follow the BODMAS rule!
BODMAS Explanation:
- Brackets
- Orders (i.e., powers and square roots, etc.)
- Division and Multiplication (from left to right)
- Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)
Instructions for Students:
- Work in pairs to come up with as many equations as you can using the mystery numbers and the operations.
- Remember, you must follow the BODMAS rule in your calculations.
- Write your final answers on paper slips and submit them to the front when you think you have the correct way to get to 21.
Conclusion:
- After about 15 minutes, gather the students and have them share their equations and discuss the different ways of reaching 21 while emphasizing the importance of the BODMAS rule in each.
- Highlight a few creative solutions, reward students with small prizes, and transition into learning about BODMAS in detail with more examples and exercises.
