Academic Subject: Science
Grade Level: Year/Grade 2 (6-7 years old)
Length: 45 minutes
Objective:
Students will be able to understand and explain the process of photosynthesis.
Students will be able to identify the necessary components for photosynthesis.
Students will be able to describe the importance of photosynthesis.
Materials:
Large poster of a plant
Pictures of the sun, water, and carbon dioxide
Card stock or paper
Markers or crayons
Introduction (5 minutes):
Show the large poster of a plant and ask students what they know about plants.
Ask students if they know how plants are able to grow.
Body (30 minutes):
What is Photosynthesis? (10 minutes)
Explain that photosynthesis is the process by which plants create their own food.
Discuss how plants take in sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create glucose and oxygen.
Show pictures of the sun, water, and carbon dioxide and ask students to identify each item.
Necessary Components (10 minutes)
Discuss the necessary components for photosynthesis: sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Have students work in pairs or groups to create a list of items necessary for photosynthesis.
Importance of Photosynthesis (10 minutes)
Discuss the importance of photosynthesis in both plant and animal life.
Explain that animals rely on plants for food and oxygen, making photosynthesis a key component in the food chain.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
Review the three main points of the lesson: what photosynthesis is, the necessary components, and the importance.
Assign homework: Have students draw a picture of a plant and label the necessary components for photosynthesis.
