Introduction (5 minutes)

• The teacher will explain that the lesson will cover the causes and outcomes of the Civil War, as well as the impact it had on American society.

Main Activity: Primary Source Analysis (15 minutes)

• Students will be given a handout with primary sources related to the Civil War. Examples may include letters from soldiers, speeches by political leaders, or photographs of battlefields.
• In small groups, students will analyze the primary sources and answer questions about them. Questions may include:
  • Who was the author of the primary source, and what was their perspective on the war?
  • What details can we gather from the primary source about the experiences of soldiers, civilians, or political leaders during the Civil War?
  • How does this primary source relate to what we have learned about the causes and outcomes of the Civil War?
• After analyzing the primary sources in small groups, students will share their findings with the class.

Guided Discussion: Key Events and Figures of the Civil War (10 minutes)

• The teacher will guide a class discussion about key events and figures of the Civil War.
• Questions may include:
  • What events led to the outbreak of the Civil War?
  • Who were some of the key military leaders of the Civil War, and what were their strategies?
  • What were some of the major battles of the Civil War, and what were their outcomes?
  • What was the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation, and how did it impact the war effort?
  • How did the Civil War end, and what were the major outcomes of the war?

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• The teacher will summarize the key points covered in the lesson.
• Students will be asked to reflect on what they have learned and how it relates to their understanding of United States history.
