Introduction to Growth Mindset in Mathematics

Objective

To help Year 4 students understand the concept of growth mindset and how it applies to learning mathematics, fostering resilience and a positive attitude towards challenges in the subject.

Overview of the Introduction

The introduction part of the lesson will use an engaging activity combined with discussion to set the stage for embracing a growth mindset in mathematics. The objective is to ensure students see challenges as opportunities to learn rather than obstacles.

Materials Needed

Activity: "Mindset Matters"

Step 1: Set the Scene (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by asking students, "What do you think it means to have a 'mindset'?" Take a few responses to gauge their understanding. Explain that mindset refers to the way we think about our abilities and intelligence. Introduce the concept of "growth mindset," where failures are seen as a stepping stone to success.

Step 2: Video Viewing (Optional, 5-10 minutes)

Show a short video clip (2-5 minutes long) that illustrates the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Choose a child-friendly video that resonates with Year 4 students and is optimally engaging.

Step 3: Sticky Note Reflections (10 minutes)

Distribute sticky notes to each student. Ask them to think of a challenging mathematical topic they have encountered or are currently struggling with. On one colour of sticky note, they should write down the challenge. On another colour, they should write a positive affirmation or a strategy they could use to work through that challenge.

Example prompts:

Step 4: Share and Discuss (10 minutes)

Invite students to share their challenges and the strategies they wrote on their sticky notes. As students share, stick the challenge notes on a large piece of chart paper labelled "Challenges in Mathematics" and the strategies on another sheet labelled "Steps to Growth."

Discuss how facing challenges is a part of learning and how applying a growth mindset can help them improve in those specific areas.

Step 5: Conclusion (5 minutes)

Wrap up the introduction by summarising the importance of resilience and positive thinking in mathematics. Encourage students to embrace challenges and try changing their self-talk to support a growth mindset. Remind them that every mathematician encounters difficulties, and it's how we respond to those difficulties that shape our learning experience.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of this introductory segment, students should:

This creative introduction not only engages students but also sets a supportive framework for the rest of the mathematics lesson, creating an environment where learning thrives through perseverance and an open mindset.
