Lesson Introduction: Exploring Author's Purpose

Objective:

Today, we will embark on an exciting adventure to discover the Author's Purpose! We'll learn how authors express their ideas through their writing and what they want us, the readers, to feel or do after reading their stories.

Beginning the Lesson

A Mysterious Package

(Materials Needed):

Hooks Their Attention

  1. Gather the Class: Start by inviting your students to sit in a circle with you on the floor.

  2. Introduce the Package: Hold up the mysterious package and ask the students if they have ever received a surprise gift. Create excitement by describing how they felt when they opened it.

  3. Ask Engaging Questions:

    • “What do you think is inside this package?”
    • “Why do you think someone sent it to me?”
    • “What do you feel when you receive a surprise?”
  4. Create Suspense: Before opening the package, build suspense by telling them that the package represents a book and the surprise inside relates to the author’s purpose.

Reveal and Relate!

  1. Unwrap the Mystery: Open the package (either revealing the contents or an empty box), and relate it to the author's intention. Explain that just like the package can hold different surprises, books can also have different purposes!

  2. Introduce Author's Purpose: Present the three statements on the note card:

    • To Inform: like a book about animals or planets.
    • To Entertain: like a funny story or a tale of adventure.
    • To Persuade: like a book that tries to convince you to make a healthy choice.

Engagement Activity:

  1. Mini-Discussion: Ask students to think about their favorite books and share with the class which purpose they believe those books serve. Encourage them to justify their thoughts.

  2. Transition to Learning: Conclude by explaining that throughout today's lesson, we will dive deeper into understanding the Author's Purpose, and as we read stories together, we'll practice identifying why the author wrote them!

Ready, Set, Read!

Let’s get started on our journey to uncover the author's purpose in the stories we love!
