By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Characteristics of Linear Functions:
Graphing Linear Functions:
Provide students with the following example problem:
Walk through the solution as a class, allowing students to follow along.
Have students identify points on the graph, state the slope and y-intercept, and draw the line.
Graph the following linear functions:
a) ( y = \frac{1}{2}x + 1 )
b) ( y = -2x + 5 )
Identify the slope and y-intercept for each function.
Write the equation of the line that passes through the points (2,3) and (4,7).
Instructions: Complete the following problems and be prepared to discuss your answers in the next class.
Graph the following linear functions:
a) ( y = -\frac{1}{3}x + 4 )
b) ( y = 0.5x - 1 )
From the graphs, identify the slope and y-intercept for each function.
Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form that has a slope of 3 and passes through the point (1, 2).
Graphs:
a) The graph of ( y = -\frac{1}{3}x + 4 ) will be a decreasing line crossing the y-axis at 4.
b) The graph of ( y = 0.5x - 1 ) will be an increasing line crossing the y-axis at -1.
Slopes and Y-Intercepts:
a) Slope: -1/3, Y-Intercept: 4
b) Slope: 0.5, Y-Intercept: -1
The equation of the line with slope 3 passing through (1, 2):
( y = 3(x - 1) + 2 ) → ( y = 3x - 1 )
