To spark curiosity and excitement about space, its wonders, and key elements through a fun and interactive activity.
Start the lesson by dimming the lights in the classroom. Use the big black sheet to create a “space” atmosphere on one wall. Invite the children to gather around the cardboard box, which will serve as our “spaceship”.
Gather everyone in a circle around the spaceship and begin a countdown together:
"5... 4... 3... 2... 1... BLAST OFF!" As the children complete the countdown, have them jump into the cardboard box as if they are boarding a spaceship.
Inside the “spaceship”, use flashlights to mimic stars twinkling in space. Encourage the children to pretend to look out the windows of the spaceship and describe what they see. Prompt them with questions like:
After the imaginative flight, gather the children back in a circle. Start a discussion about what they saw in space, gently introducing basic concepts:
Close the introduction by telling the children they will be learning more about the stars, planets, and astronauts in the following activities. Display star stickers on the children’s shirts, celebrating their journey into space, and encourage them to share what they are most excited to learn about.
Keep the energy high, encourage creative thinking, and ensure that every child feels included in the activity. This is an opportunity to inspire a future interest in science and space exploration!
