Lesson Plan: Introduction to Ten Frames
Academic Subject
Mathematics
Grade Level
Reception / Kindergarten
Length
30 Minutes
Objectives
- Students will understand the concept of ten frames.
- Students will be able to visually represent numbers 1-10 using ten frames.
- Students will practice counting and recognizing numbers through hands-on activities.
Materials Needed
- Printed ten frame templates (one per student)
- Counters (e.g., small cubes, buttons, or counting chips)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Flashcards with numbers 1-10
Lesson Structure
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Greeting: Welcome the students and sit them in a circle.
- Introduction to Ten Frames:
- Ask the students if they know what a ten frame is.
- Explain that a ten frame is a 2x5 grid used to help visualize numbers 1 to 10.
- Show an example of a ten frame on the whiteboard.
Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)
- Demonstration:
- Draw a ten frame on the whiteboard.
- Use counters to fill the ten frame while counting aloud. For instance, fill it with 5 counters and say, “This shows the number 5.”
- Explaining the Structure:
- Explain that the top row contains 5 boxes and the bottom row contains 5 boxes, making it easy to understand numbers up to 10.
Guided Practice (10 Minutes)
- Individual Activity:
- Hand out ten frame templates and counters to each student.
- Call out numbers (1-10) for students to represent using their ten frames.
- Walk around the classroom to provide assistance as needed.
- Group Sharing:
- Ask students to hold up their ten frames and show the class what number they created.
- Encourage classmates to count together.
Closing (5 Minutes)
- Recap:
- Gather students back in a circle.
- Review what a ten frame is and what numbers they represented.
- Ask guided questions, such as “How many boxes did we fill for the number 3?”
Homework Assignment
Task
- Complete the following ten frame worksheets:
- Fill in the ten frame for the number 4.
- Draw a ten frame and fill in the number 7 using dots or counters (circle the dots or counters).
Correct Answers
-
For the number 4:
- The ten frame should have 4 counters filled in (which can be drawn as dots).

For the number 7:
- The ten frame should have 7 counters filled in.

Assessment
- Observe students during the guided practice activity to ensure they understand how to fill in their ten frames.
- Review the completed homework for correct representations of numbers.
Modifications
- For students needing additional support, provide pre-filled ten frames to assist in understanding.
- For advanced learners, challenge them to create ten frames for numbers up to 20, using a double ten frame.
Standards Alignment
This lesson aligns with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, specifically:
- K.CC.A.1: Count to 100 by ones and tens.
- K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
This lesson plan incorporates engaging activities and visual aids to help young learners grasp foundational number concepts using ten frames effectively.
