Introduction to CVC Words

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to learn about something really exciting called CVC words. Can anyone tell me what a CVC word is? That's right! CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. Let's look at a few examples together.

Writes "cat," "big," and "red" on the whiteboard.

"See how each word has a consonant at the beginning, a vowel in the middle, and another consonant at the end? Now, let’s say these words together. What’s this first word? (Points to 'cat') Yes! It’s 'cat.' Great job! Let’s try the next one! (Repeats for each word) Excellent, everyone!"

Printable Card Activity

"Now it’s time for a fun activity! I am going to hand out some printable cards to each of you. These cards have spaces for you to write CVC and heart words. When I call out a word, I want you to listen carefully and write it down on your card.

Distributes cards to students.

"Let’s start with a CVC word. The first word is 'dog.' Write 'dog' on your card. Who can tell me the letters we used? (Waits for responses) Great work! Next, how about the heart word 'the'? Write 'the' on your card too. Keep going—next is 'hat.' Make sure to write it down! Now let’s do one more—'run.' Excellent job, everyone! You all did beautifully!"

Group Activity

"Now we are going to get into small groups! Please pair up with three friends to make a group of four. Each of you will take turns reading your cards to one another. This will help us learn better!

Gives students time to form groups.

"Remember to listen while your friends read—this is a great way to help each other. You have 8 minutes! Go ahead and start reading!"

During this time, the teacher circulates and provides support as needed.

Physical Activity Break

"Okay, friends! Let’s take a little break and get our bodies moving! Everyone stand up! We’re going to do some jumping jacks! Ready? Let’s do ten together! 1, 2, 3…

Counts along with students as they do jumping jacks.

"Great job, everyone! Now, let’s shake it out with a quick dance! Wiggle those arms and legs! This will help us get back to our seats focused and ready to learn more!"

Class Discussion

"Alright, friends! Let’s come back together. I want to hear what words you worked on with your groups. Who would like to share a CVC or heart word they read?

Encourages several students to share.

"Wonderful! Remember, CVC words help us sound out words, and heart words are the ones we see all the time in reading. It’s important we practice these together and at home!"

Collect/Check Cards

"Before we finish up today, I’d like you to hand your cards to me. I'm going to check and see if you wrote the words we learned.

Collects cards or randomly checks a few.

"Fantastic work today! I’m proud of you all for learning about CVC and heart words. Don’t forget to practice reading them at home. You’ll be amazing readers!"
