Welcome, young mathematicians! Today, we are embarking on an exciting adventure into the world of subtracting! Are you ready to explore?
Imagine you are standing at the entrance of a magical forest filled with friendly creatures. Each creature has a special number of apples they want to share with you. But there's a little twist! Some apples must go back to the trees in the forest. As brave explorers, your mission is to figure out how many apples each creature will have after sharing!
Before we start our adventure, let’s meet some of our forest friends:
But hold on! Each friend is going to give some of their apples back:
Now it’s your turn to help our friends! You are going to use subtraction to find out how many apples each friend has left after sharing. Write down these subtraction sentences:
For Benny the Bear:
For Lila the Rabbit:
For Tommy the Turtle:
Take a moment to solve these subtraction problems. You can use your fingers, draw pictures, or use counters if you have them!
Now it’s your chance!
Once you’ve solved the problems, share your answers with a friend or a partner! Talk about how you felt doing the subtraction and if you have any cool strategies that helped you out.
At the end of the lesson, we’ll celebrate with a fun apple-themed game where we’ll illustrate our reductions with drawings and stories!
Are you ready to enter the Magical Subtraction Forest? Let’s jump in and start exploring the world of subtraction together!
