Objectives

Materials Needed

- Worksheets with different roles and steps in book production (to be handed out)

Introduction (5 minutes)

Engage the Students
- Begin by asking students if they have ever read a book. What do they like about it?
- Show a simple book and discuss what they see (cover, title, illustrations).

- Explain that today, we will learn how a book is made, from start to finish!
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
Step 1: Writing the Story
- Explain that the first step is writing the story. This can be done by an author.
Step 2: Editing the Story
- Discuss the importance of editing the story. An editor helps the author to make the story better.
Step 3: Illustrating the Book
- Talk about how illustrators draw pictures that go along with the text.
Step 4: Designing the Cover
- Explain that graphic designers create the book cover to make it attractive to readers.
Step 5: Printing the Book
- Discuss what happens at the printing press where many copies of the book are made.
Step 6: Marketing and Selling
- Briefly mention how books are sold in stores and online, highlighting marketing roles.
Group Activity (10 minutes)
Role Play
- Split students into small groups and assign each group a role from the steps discussed (Author, Editor, Illustrator, etc.).
- Have each group discuss their role for a few minutes and then present what they learned to the class.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Recap the major steps and roles discussed in making a book.
- Ask students why teamwork is important in producing a book.
- Encourage students to think about what role they would like to take if they could make their own book.
Homework Assignment
Task 1: Drawing
- Draw a picture of your favorite book. Include the title and author.
Task 2: Role Explanation
- Write 2-3 sentences about which role you would like to have in book production (Author, Illustrator, etc.) and why.
