Activities
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by asking students what they think "setting" means in a story. Brainstorm answers and write them on the board.
- Explain that the setting includes the time, place, and context in which a story occurs, and it can influence plot and character development.
Reading Discussion (15 minutes)
- Reading Chapters 10-11: Have the students read the chapters silently (or choose a read-aloud method if preferred).
- Guided Discussion: After reading, facilitate a discussion using the following questions:
- What is the setting of Chapters 10-11? (Time, place, atmosphere)
- How does the setting affect the characters’ actions and decisions?
- Can you find specific examples in the text where the setting creates tension or enhances the mood?
Group Activity (10 minutes)
- Divide the class into small groups and assign each group to create a visual poster that illustrates the setting from Chapters 10-11.
- Each poster should include:
- A description of the setting (time and place)
- Key elements that influence the plot or characters
- Relevant quotes from the text that reflect the setting's impact
- Allow groups to present their posters in a brief share-out session.
Closure (5 minutes)
- Summarize the key points discussed regarding the significance of the setting.
- Encourage students to think about settings in other stories they read and how those settings impacted the narrative.

- Setting Description: (e.g., "The story takes place in a dark, abandoned forest.")
- Influence of Setting:
- (e.g., "The eerie atmosphere makes Character A feel scared and alone, leading them to make a rash decision to leave the group.")
