Objectives

Introduction (5 minutes)
- Teacher will ask students if they have ever heard the terms connotation and denotation before.
- Teacher will give brief explanation of how words can have different meanings in different contexts.
- Teacher will introduce the examples of the words "home" and "house", and "youthful" and "childish" to help students understand the difference in connotation and denotation.
Definitions (10 minutes)
- Teacher will give the formal definitions of connotation and denotation, along with examples to illustrate the difference.
- Students will be given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the examples provided.
Practice (10 minutes)
- Students will be given a list of words and asked to provide the denotation of each word.
- After the class has gone over the list, the teacher will provide a sentence using each word and ask the students to identify the connotation of each word within the sentence.
Analysis (5 minutes)
- The teacher will provide a passage of text and ask students to identify any words that have connotations and any words that have denotations.
