By the end of this lesson, students will have learned how to analyze and review films in English.
Start the class with a brief discussion about movies and ask students to share their favorite films. This will create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the classroom.
As a class, review frequently used vocabulary words in film analysis, such as "plot," "character development," "cinematography," and "soundtrack." Ensure all students are familiar with these terms and understand their meaning in English.
Next, assign each student a film to watch over the weekend in English (with subtitles if needed). The film should exemplify the characteristics of the film genre they enjoy the most (e.g. action, romance, suspense, etc.). Each student will come to class ready to present a brief synopsis and their personal review on their assigned film. This activity will encourage students to practice listening, speaking, and analytical skills in English.
After each student presentation, the class will participate in an open discussion about the shared films. Students will discuss what they enjoyed or disliked about the movie, provide constructive feedback to each other, and compare and contrast the different films.
On the board, provide a list of key vocabulary words used throughout the lesson, along with their respective definitions, for students to reference. End the lesson by reminding students that by analyzing films in English, not only are they practicing a valuable language skill, but they're also expanding their cultural literacy and critical thinking abilities.
