Class Discussion Questions: Using Context Clues to Find Meaning of Unknown Words
In our Year 2 Reading class, we will explore how to use context clues to understand new words. Below are three discussion questions to help guide our conversation.
Question 1: What are Context Clues?
- Discussion Points:
- Can you explain what context clues are in your own words?
- What types of context clues can we look for in a sentence? (Examples: definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or examples)
Question 2: How Can Context Clues Help Us?
- Discussion Points:
- Why do you think it's important to understand unknown words while we read?
- Can you share a time when you used context clues to guess the meaning of a word?
Question 3: Practicing Using Context Clues
- Discussion Points:
- Let’s find an unfamiliar word in a book we are reading. How can we figure out what it means using the surrounding words?
- After identifying the word, what strategies can we use to check if our guess was correct? (Examples: rereading the sentence, using pictures, or asking for help)
Feel free to think about your answers to these questions and be ready to share your thoughts during our class discussion!
