Welcome to Decimal Town!

Introduction to Decimals

Good morning, young mathematicians! Today, we are going on an exciting adventure to Decimal Town, where numbers come alive, and we will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.

Drop Your Bags!

Before we begin our journey, let's picture Decimal Town in our minds. Imagine we have our bags filled with special decimal coins, with values like $0.25, $0.50, and $1.00. Just like real money, these coins need our mathematical skills to help us trade, shop, and share with our friends!

The Decimal Challenge

Now that we are all set, here’s what we’re going to do:

  1. Meet the Decimal Locals: As we explore, we'll meet friendly Decimal characters who need our help with their math problems! For example, Penny the Point will ask how many 0.10 coins it would take to equal 0.50.

  2. Create a Decimal Market: You will set up your very own market stall with different decimal items. You’ll need to calculate the total price of items when your friends want to buy them.

  3. Treasure Hunt: We’ll have a treasure hunt where you’ll solve decimal problems to unlock clues leading to treasure chests filled with imaginary decimal gems.

Let’s Get Started!

To kick off our day, let's gather in a big circle. I want each of you to create a "Decimal Coin" using paper. You can choose any value that has two decimal places (like $0.75 or $0.30). Once everyone has made their coins, we'll have a fun "Decimal Exchange" where you can trade your coins and practice adding and subtracting them together!

Are you ready to explore Decimal Town and discover the magical world of decimals? Let’s dive into our first activity!
