Duration: 30 Minutes

Grade Level: Middle School

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 Minutes)

Begin the lesson by asking students what they think a summary is. Write their responses on the whiteboard. Explain that a summary is a brief statement or account of the main points of a text, which allows the reader to understand the text's primary ideas without going into detail.

Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

  1. Purpose of a Summary:

    • Discuss the importance of summarizing texts, such as aiding comprehension and retaining information.
  2. Components of a Good Summary:

    • Main Idea: The primary point the author is trying to convey.
    • Supporting Details: Key points that support the main idea but are not necessary for the summary.
  3. Steps to Write a Summary:

    • Read the text thoroughly.
    • Identify the main idea.
    • Take note of supporting details.
    • Write the summary in your own words, keeping it concise (typically 1/3 the length of the original text).

Using a projector, display a sample passage and demonstrate summarizing it step by step. Encourage participation and invite students to suggest main ideas and supporting details.

Guided Practice (10 Minutes)

Distribute handouts containing a short passage. In pairs, have students:

  1. Read the passage together.
  2. Discuss and identify the main idea and supporting details.
  3. Write a summary of the passage in their own words.

Walk around the classroom, providing help and guidance as needed. After 5 minutes, ask pairs to share their summaries with the class. Provide feedback, highlighting effective summaries and areas for improvement.

Independent Practice (5 Minutes)

Ask students to think of a recent article or story they read. Instruct them to write a summary of that text using the steps discussed. Encourage them to keep it to 3-5 sentences.

Homework Assignment

Instructions: Write a summary based on a passage provided below.

Passage: "Many animals in the wild have adapted to their environments in order to survive. For example, some Arctic foxes have thick fur to keep them warm in freezing temperatures, while camels have developed the ability to go without water for long periods, allowing them to survive in arid desert conditions. These adaptations are crucial for the animals' survival and show the incredible ways animals adjust to their habitats."

Tasks:

  1. Identify the main idea of the passage.
  2. List two supporting details.
  3. Write a summary of the passage in your own words.

Answers:

  1. Main Idea: Animals adapt to their environments for survival.
  2. Supporting Details:
    • Arctic foxes have thick fur for warmth.
    • Camels can go without water for extended periods.
  3. Summary: Animals adapt to their environments to survive, such as Arctic foxes with thick fur for cold weather and camels that can survive long periods without water in deserts.

Closing (2 Minutes)

Recap the lesson by highlighting the main points about writing a summary. Encourage students to practice summarizing different types of texts at home.
