Objective
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and use common nouns in sentences. They will differentiate between common and proper nouns through engaging activities.
Materials Needed
- Chart paper with common nouns written on it
- Flashcards with pictures of common nouns
- Whiteboard and markers
- Coloring sheets with images representing common nouns
- Crayons or markers
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting the Students: Start the lesson by welcoming the students and gathering them in a circle.
- Engage: Ask students to share things they see around the classroom. Write these items on the whiteboard as they share.
- Introduce Common Nouns: Explain that the names of common objects, animals, and people in our everyday life are called common nouns.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
- Presentation: Use the chart paper to present examples of common nouns (e.g., dog, cat, book, chair).
- Define Common Noun: Explain that a common noun is a general name for a person, place, or thing. Contrast this with proper nouns, which are specific names (like 'Fluffy' the dog).
- Visuals: Show flashcards with pictures of common nouns. As each card is displayed, ask the students to identify the noun and repeat it together.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)

- Divide the class into small groups.
- Provide each group with a mix of flashcards containing both common and proper nouns.
- Ask the students to sort the cards into two piles: common nouns and proper nouns.
