Materials Needed


Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Greeting and Objective Overview

    • Welcome students and introduce the lesson topic.
    • Discuss the importance of understanding themes in literature.
  2. Defining Theme

    • Ask students if they know what a theme is.
    • Define a theme as the central idea or message in a piece of literature.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Read the Short Story

    • Distribute copies of the chosen short story.
    • Read the story aloud as a class or listen to an audio version.
  2. Class Discussion

    • After reading, engage students in a discussion.
      • What were some of the main events?
      • What messages do you think the author is trying to convey?
    • Write students’ responses on the whiteboard.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Theme Analysis Worksheet

    • Hand out the Theme Analysis Worksheet.
    • Instruct students to identify at least two themes from the story and find textual evidence that supports their choices.
  2. Pair and Share

    • Have students work in pairs to discuss their findings.
    • Encourage them to listen to each other and refine their ideas.

Closure (5 minutes)

  1. Class Share Out

    • Invite a few pairs to share one theme they identified and the evidence supporting it.
    • Discuss the variety of themes and their interpretations.
  2. Summary and Exit Ticket

    • Summarize the key points of the lesson.
    • For the exit ticket, have students write down one theme they learned about today and one example of evidence from the text.
