Objective
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and analyze the main idea and supporting details in a text. They will practice summarizing this information in their own words.
Materials Needed
- A short reading passage (1-2 paragraphs)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Notebooks and pens/pencils
- Graphic organizer for main idea and details

Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Begin with a brief discussion about what a main idea is and why it's important for understanding texts.
- Ask students to raise hands and share their thoughts on the main idea of a story they recently read.
- Write a few student responses on the whiteboard.
Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

Introduce the Reading Passage
- Hand out the selected reading passage to each student.
- Read the passage aloud as a class.

Identify the Main Idea
- Explain how to find the main idea by looking for keywords and phrases that capture the essence of the text.
- Model finding the main idea by thinking aloud while going through the first few sentences of the passage.

Supporting Details
- Discuss how supporting details provide additional information about the main idea.
- Highlight the relationship between the main idea and supporting details in the passage.
Guided Practice (10 Minutes)
- Ask students to work in pairs to identify the main idea and at least three supporting details from the passage.
- Distribute the graphic organizer for students to fill in as they work.
- Circulate around the classroom to provide assistance and feedback.
Independent Practice (5 Minutes)
- Have students write a summary paragraph of the reading passage using their identified main idea and supporting details.
- Remind them to use their own words and to keep the summary concise.
Closure (5 Minutes)
- Invite a few students to share their summaries with the class.
- Reinforce the concept of main idea and supporting details based on student responses.
- Encourage students to use these skills in their future reading assignments.
Assessment
- Monitor student participation during discussions and pair work.
- Collect graphic organizers and summaries to evaluate understanding of main idea and supporting details.
