Scenario:

Imagine you are a team of scientists exploring a brand-new planet, Energia, which is unlike anything you've encountered before. On this planet, the inhabitants—known as Energians—have evolved in a way that their very survival depends on a unique process similar to cellular respiration. However, there's a twist! The Energians can only thrive if they can convert energy from their surrounding environment effectively.

Start of the Lesson

  1. The Grabber:

    • Begin the lesson with a short video clip showing various environments on planet Energia. Highlight vibrant life forms that thrive in unique conditions, showcasing their struggle for survival and the energetic exchanges they undergo.
  2. The Challenge Announcement:

    • As the video ends, explain to students that we will be taking on the role of Energians today. Their mission is to understand how the energy conversion happens, and how they can optimize this process for survival!
  3. Group Activity:

    • Divide the class into small teams and assign each team a specific environment on Energia (think deserts, oceans, forests, etc.). Each team is tasked with answering a series of questions that relate to cellular respiration:
      • How do the Energians in your environment acquire their energy?
      • What byproducts are produced during their energy processing?
      • Why is this process essential for survival in their specific habitat?
  4. Discussion and Connection:

    • After 10-15 minutes of investigation, have each group present their findings. Facilitate a discussion that connects their discoveries to the actual process of cellular respiration in plants and animals on Earth. Emphasize the similarities and differences, and why understanding cellular respiration is crucial for all life forms.
