5th Grade Science Lesson Plan: Life Cycles
Lesson Duration
30 minutes
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define what a life cycle is.
- Describe the different stages of a life cycle in various organisms.
- Compare and contrast the life cycles of at least two different species.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Chart paper and markers
- Pictures of different organisms (butterflies, frogs, plants, etc.)
- Life cycle worksheets (print-outs)
- Projector and computer (optional for video)
Standards Addressed
- NGSS MS-LS1-4: Use argument based on evidence to support the claim that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
- NGSS MS-LS1-5: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
Introduction (5 minutes)
Hook
Begin the lesson with a fun question: "How many of you have seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly?"
Discussion
Engage students with a brief discussion about their observations of different life cycles. Highlight the terms "life cycle" and its significance in understanding the growth and development of organisms.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
What is a Life Cycle?
- Define life cycle: the series of changes in the life of an organism, including reproduction.
Stages of Life Cycles
- Introduce the common stages of a life cycle:
- Birth/Hatch
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Death
Examples to Cover
- Butterfly Life Cycle:
- Egg → Caterpillar (larva) → Pupa (chrysalis) → Adult Butterfly
- Frog Life Cycle:
- Egg → Tadpole → Froglet → Adult Frog
- Plant Life Cycle:
- Seed → Germination → Growth → Flowering → Seed production
Visuals
Show pictures of the different stages for each organism discussed. If available, play a short video clip showing a time-lapse of these transformations.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Group Activity
- Divide students into small groups and assign each group an organism to analyze. Suggested organisms: butterfly, frog, plant, or chicken.
- Each group will create a life cycle poster that includes:
- The name of the organism
- The stages of its life cycle with illustrations
Presentation
- After 5 minutes, each group will present their poster to the class and explain the life cycle stages they've illustrated.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
Life Cycle Worksheet
- Distribute the life cycle worksheets that include:
- Fill-in-the-blank sections for key terms
- Matching stages to the correct life cycle
- A short diagram activity to label the life cycle of a chosen organism.
Homework Assignment
- Ask students to choose an organism of their choice and write a brief paragraph describing its life cycle, including illustrations if desired.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
Recap
Review key points discussed in the lesson by asking questions:
- What is a life cycle?
- Name one stage of a butterfly's life cycle and one stage of a frog's life cycle.
Exit Ticket
Have students write down one new thing they learned about life cycles on a sticky note as they leave.
Assessment
- Informal assessment through observation during group presentations and the completion of worksheets.
- Collect exit tickets to evaluate understanding of the lesson concepts.
Modifications and Accommodations
- Provide additional support and visuals for students who may need it.
- Challenge advanced students to research and include more diverse organisms or complex life cycles in their homework.
