Welcome to Data Detective Day!

Introduction

Hello, Super Clever Mathematicians! Today, we are going to become Data Detectives! 🌟 Are you excited? I know I am! Data is all around us, and it's our job to discover all the fascinating stories it can tell!

The Mystery of the Missing Cookies 🥳

Story Time!

To kick off our lesson, let’s imagine a delicious scenario! Picture your favorite kind of cookies – chocolate chip, oatmeal, or maybe peanut butter. Yesterday, in our classroom cookie jar, we had a mystery event.

Unfortunately, some cookies went missing! Can you believe it? We need your help to figure out which cookie type was taken and how many of each type were left.

Activity

  1. Group Up! We’re going to divide into small teams of Data Detectives.
  2. Choose Your Cookies! Each team will choose their favorite cookie type and create a little tally chart of how many cookies they think were in the jar:
    • Chocolate Chip
    • Oatmeal
    • Peanut Butter
  3. Get Creative! Use colored pencils to draw and color your cookies!
  4. Share Your Findings! Once you have created your tally chart, we will gather together to compare our results and see if we can solve the mystery!

Discussion Questions

After the activity, think about these questions:

Conclusion

By the end of this lesson, we will learn how to collect data, create charts, and most importantly, have fun while doing it! Remember, every number tells a story, and today we are the storytellers! Grab your magnifying glasses, Data Detectives, and let’s solve the mystery of the missing cookies! 🍪🕵️‍♂️

Are you ready to get started? Let’s go catch those cookies!
