To master the art of using commas so that we can communicate more effectively, like skilled scribes of the past!
Begin with a short, engaging story that intentionally excludes commas. Read the paragraph aloud with dramatic flair, emphasizing how chaotic it sounds without proper punctuation.
"Once upon a time in a kingdom far away there lived a clever fox a generous deer and a wise old owl they each had their own talents and decided to work together to solve a mystery that had puzzled the animals for years but they had one big problem they could never agree on anything."
Ask your students: "What did you notice about the way it sounds? What confusion arose?"
Now that we've captured their attention with a chaotic tale, let’s introduce the hero of our story: the comma! Explain its role in bringing clarity to sentences, making lists easier to read, and separating ideas.
List Commas: Use commas to separate items in a series.
Introductory Phrases: Use a comma after an introductory phrase.
Compound Sentences: Use a comma before coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) when joining two independent clauses.
Now, it’s time for a challenge! Break the class into small groups and provide each group with a sentence that requires comma placement. Let them find the appropriate locations for commas and discuss their choices.
