To kick off our lesson on "The Never Ending Story," let's embark on a creative journey to ignite our imaginations! Do you remember the last book or movie that captivated you so deeply you lost track of time? How about a story that didn’t just end, but continued to echo in your thoughts long after you turned the last page or finished the last scene?
Imaginary Portal: Begin by dimming the lights in the classroom and playing an ambient soundtrack that evokes a sense of adventure. You might use soft instrumental music or sounds from nature. Allow students a moment to settle into the atmosphere.
Reflect and Write: Hand out blank sheets of paper with the prompt:
“Imagine you have discovered a hidden portal to a universe where stories never end. Write the first paragraph of your story.”
Allow students 5-7 minutes to jot down their thoughts. Encourage them to think about the characters, setting, and possible adventures that await them beyond the portal.
Share and Imagine Together: After writing, invite a few students to share their opening paragraphs. As one student reads, ask the others to close their eyes and visualize the world being created. Prompt the class with questions like:
After sharing, explain how their imaginative introductions echo the themes in The Never Ending Story, where imagination, adventure, and the notion of a never-ending journey are central.
Transition into the lesson by emphasizing that just like their stories, the tale we’re about to explore is rich with endless possibilities.
Remember: The stories we tell create worlds both within and outside of us. Let’s dive into the endless adventure of Michael Ende’s masterpiece!
