Paste the text of an essay for grading | It's about conducting initial assessments. When we do diagnostics, it's not to belittle bilingual learners, but it's to help identify if there's any current gaps in language and skill. Diagnostics also gather information. They're able to give us information about gaps in maths, English literacy. It could be that there's conversations with parents, so we know a lot more about the culture, the language. Initial assessments also allowed us to provide support, so it could be that if there is gaps in knowledge, we're able to put support in the classroom from the beginning and this may be aided by bilingual ta. An initial assessment also includes the following information about the child. It could be through an initial assessment we see what the child is strongest at. Maths is an international language, in a sense, and it may be that the child does better at this subject and therefore they may lack in English. And we pick this up on initial assessment. Types of information relevant people could use previous education. It's important to look at a child's background in education and see where their education is. It may be that they've had education in the uk, or it may be that they've emigrated from a different country, and this will help form a plan in terms of support as well as if there is any additional language needs. Additional needs will include teachers, TAs, support child and their learning needs. Gathering information for home language will also be needed. So it could be that the teacher or the TA takes an interest and initiative and uses certain words or phrases. This will help the child to feel comfortable, have a sense of belonging, resilience, and this will also help language. It also helps the child enter the curriculum if they feel a little bit more comfortable. It's also specialised English as a second language teachers or TAs. And again, it could be that their expertise and knowledge could be inbuilt into lesson planning or modelling language or enabling small groups. A specialist assessment may be needed to help distinguish between language acquisition difficulties and possible additional needs. A specialised assessment could be carried out from an external professional such as speech and language, or an educational psychologist, and these individuals will gather information for an assessment. They'll see the level of proficiency for home language, any special educational needs, any health assessments or whether there's an individual learning plan. Because somebody has English as a second language, it doesn't make them exempt of a special educational need. So all of these resources in terms of assessment and teachers that can be provided can enable somebody identify further conditions such as ADHD or dyslexia or disconnect. |
