Lesson Introduction: The Time Travel Postcard

Objective

Today, we’re going to dive into the exciting world of historical recounts. We’ll learn how to explore and express significant past events through storytelling.

The Time Travel Postcard Activity

Imagine this!

You’ve just discovered a magical postcard that allows you to travel back in time. As you hold the postcard, you're whisked away to an important moment in Australia’s history!

What’s on the Postcard?

Your Task

  1. Find Your Time: Choose a moment in Australian history you would like to write about. This could be the arrival of the First Fleet, the Gold Rush, or the Federation of Australia.

  2. Picture It: Close your eyes and imagine what it was like during that time. What did the people look like? What were they wearing? What were they doing?

  3. Write Your Own Postcard: Begin writing your postcard to your "Future Friend.” Describe your surroundings and what’s happening! Use your imagination and historical facts to craft a vivid recount of your experience.

Example Postcard

Front: [Illustration of the Sydney Opera House]

Back:

Dear Future Friend,

You won’t believe what I just witnessed! The first day the Sydney Opera House opened was bursting with excitement! People wore their best clothes, and I saw children laughing and playing on the grass. The building sparkled under the bright sun, and music floated in the air. I couldn't wait to tell you about it!

Yours excitedly,

[Your Name]

Now, let’s get started on our own time travel postcards and explore Australian history through our writing!
