Lesson Plan: Mathematics in Spanish
Grade Level: 6
Duration: 30 Minutes
Subject: Mathematics
Lesson Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and name basic mathematical operations in Spanish.
- Students will practice solving simple math problems using Spanish terms.
- Students will improve their vocabulary in both mathematics and Spanish.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Spanish-English dictionaries (optional)
- Handouts with vocabulary lists
- Worksheets for practice problems
Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet the students in Spanish: “¡Hola, clase!”
- Introduce the topic: "Hoy vamos a aprender matemáticas en español" (Today we are going to learn math in Spanish).
- Write the lesson objectives on the board.
Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes)
-
Basic Mathematical Terms: Introduce and explain the following vocabulary:
- Suma (Addition)
- Resta (Subtraction)
- Multiplicación (Multiplication)
- División (Division)
- Igual (Equals)
-
Examples: Write a simple equation on the board for each term in both English and Spanish:
- Suma: 3 + 2 = 5 / Tres más dos es igual a cinco.
- Resta: 7 - 4 = 3 / Siete menos cuatro es igual a tres.
- Multiplicación: 6 x 3 = 18 / Seis por tres es igual a dieciocho.
- División: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 / Doce dividido por cuatro es igual a tres.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
-
Hand out worksheets with a mix of arithmetic problems and Spanish translations.
-
Example Problems: Solve a couple of sample problems together as a class:
- Translate and solve: “Tres más cinco” and “Ocho menos dos”.
- Discuss the answers: "¿Cuánto es tres más cinco?" (What is three plus five?) and “¿Cuánto es ocho menos dos?” (What is eight minus two?).
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Allow students to work on the remaining problems on the worksheets independently.
- Students should translate problems from English to Spanish and solve them.
Assessment
- Collect worksheets for completion and correctness.
- Review answers as a class.
Homework
Assignment:
Complete the following problems at home. Write both the mathematical equations and their translations in Spanish:
- (Addition) 4 + 6 = ?
- (Subtraction) 10 - 3 = ?
- (Multiplication) 5 x 2 = ?
- (Division) 16 ÷ 4 = ?
Questions:
- What does "suma" mean in English?
- Translate "8 minus 5 equals 3" into Spanish.
Answers:
- 4 + 6 = 10 / Cuatro más seis es igual a diez.
- 10 - 3 = 7 / Diez menos tres es igual a siete.
- 5 x 2 = 10 / Cinco por dos es igual a diez.
- 16 ÷ 4 = 4 / Dieciséis dividido entre cuatro es igual a cuatro.
Questions:
- "Suma" means "Addition".
- "8 minus 5 equals 3" translates to "Ocho menos cinco es igual a tres."
Conclusion (Exit Slip)
- Ask students to share one new word they learned in Spanish related to math.
Thank you for participating in today's lesson! ¡Hasta luego! (See you later!)
