Introduction to Aboriginal Art

Lesson Hook: "The Journey of a Dreaming"

Welcome, Year 8! Today, we are embarking on a visually rich adventure through the world of Aboriginal art. Before we dive into the techniques and styles, let’s set the stage with a little activity that will pique your curiosity and spark your imagination.

Activity: The Dreaming Circle

  1. Gather Around: Let's form a circle in the classroom. Once you are seated, look around at your classmates and take a moment. Each of you is part of a greater community, just like the stories and cultures in Aboriginal art.

  2. Close Your Eyes: Take a deep breath, and as you exhale, picture a place that feels special to you—a location that connects you to your family, culture, or personal history. It could be a beach, a forest, a park, or even your backyard.

  3. Imagery in Mind: Visualise the colours, the sounds, the textures, and the emotions that come with it. With your eyes still closed, think about how you would express this place in artwork. What symbols or images would you use to tell your story?

  4. Open Sharing: Now, one by one, I invite you to share your place with the group. No need to describe it in detail; simply share the emotions or ideas that arise from it. What words or shapes come to mind? (Each student takes a turn, encouraging creativity and personal expression.)

  5. Connect to Aboriginal Art: After everyone has shared, we’ll discuss how Aboriginal artists have a similar connection to their lands and ancestors. Their artwork is infused with their "Dreaming" stories—myths that explain the origins of the land, people, and creatures.

Transition to the Lesson

Now that we have tapped into our creativity and shared our personal connections to places, let's explore how Aboriginal artists express their stories through symbols, colours, and techniques in their art.

In this lesson, we will investigate various Aboriginal art styles, learn about the significance of symbols in Indigenous culture, and even try our hand at creating our own pieces inspired by what we've shared today.

Are you ready to unleash your inner artist? Let’s dive deeper into the vibrant world of Aboriginal art!
