Objective: To ignite interest in phonics and prepare students for a fun-filled lesson on sounds and spelling!
1. Gather the Class: Start by arranging the students in a circle on the carpet or a designated area. Make sure they can see you clearly.
2. Show the Beach Ball: Hold up the beach ball and explain that it’s not just any beach ball; it’s a Phonics Beach Ball! Each section of the ball has different letters and sounds written on it.
3. Explain the Game: Tell the students that you’ll toss the ball to one of them, and when they catch it, they will look at their right thumb (which will land on a letter or sound). Their job is to say the sound or word that starts with that letter. For example, if their thumb lands on "C," they might say "cat" or "cake."
4. Toss the Ball: Start tossing the ball around the class. Encourage students to shout out their phonics sounds excitedly. If someone catches it and is unsure, invite others to help them out!
5. Transition to Mystery Objects: After a few rounds of the beach ball game, bring out your mystery objects. Surprise the students by revealing the objects one by one.
6. Phonics Connection: For each object, ask the class to identify the starting sound. For example, if you bring out a toy car, students can shout, "C!" and practice saying the sound together.
Finish the activity by highlighting how phonics helps us read, spell, and write. Explain that today’s lesson will be all about exploring letters and sounds more deeply through fun activities. Let them know they’re going to become phonics superheroes!
