Fun with Phonics!

Introduction

Welcome, Young Language Explorers!

Today, we are going to dive into the wonderful world of phonics! Phonics helps us understand how letters and sounds work together to form words. Are you ready for a fun adventure? Let’s get started with something special!

The Secret Letter Sounds Game

Objective

We will begin our lesson with an exciting game that will tickle your ears and challenge your brains!

What You Need

  1. A small bag or basket
  2. A variety of objects or pictures (e.g., apple, ball, cat, dog, elephant). You can either bring these from home or I will have some ready for you!

How to Play

  1. Gather around! Everyone will sit in a circle.
  2. I will place the bag or basket in the middle of our circle.
  3. One at a time, you will take turns reaching into the bag and pulling out an object or picture.
  4. When you hold up your object, say its name out loud! Then, let’s all listen carefully to the first sound in that word.
  5. Everyone will join in to say the sound together! Can you think of another word that starts with the same sound?

Example

If you pull out an ‘apple’, you will say:

Then, everyone will echo:
“/a/ for apple!”
And we can think of other words that start with the same sound, like ‘ant’ or ‘alligator’.

Wrap-Up

After everyone has had a turn, we will talk about the different sounds we’ve discovered. Together, we will create a sound chart on the board featuring all the new sounds and words we found.
